About Us

We are a small-scale, family-run market garden located 5 miles north of Virden. Our 12-acre farm provides the surrounding communities with fresh produce from June to November.

We offer a wide selection of vegetables, including potatoes, corn, carrots, beets, beans, peas, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, garlic, and onions.

We distribute our produce at the local Virden Farmers' Market (every Friday from June- September, 10 am- 12:30 pm) and through our 10-week CSA program. We also offer online preorder, with the option for pick-up or delivery.

Meet Your Farmers

Marlin Peters, Owner/operator

Growing up, Marlin spent countless summers working at his parents' market garden (the original Peters Market Garden). During his university years, he (and his brother Chad) independently managed the business for several seasons.

After some years away, Marlin and his wife Deb officially took over the family business in 2008. Having bought a nearby acreage, they relocated the operation to its present location.

Marlin manages the garden's operations, from the marketing and admin side to the planting and harvesting.

During the off-season, Marlin works as a Senior Accounting Technician at MNP.

The Team

The work we do wouldn't be possible without our hardworking crew! Each summer, we hire a handful of high school and university students who faithfully show up rain or shine to plant, harvest, wash, and package our vegetables. Over the years, this team has included Marlin's daughters, nephews, and nieces, as well as other local students.

The Origin Story

Peters Market Garden was established by Walter and Erna Peters (Marlin's parents) in 1978.

In that first season, all of the produce came from Erna's personal garden. A particularly bountiful harvest inspired an ad in the local paper for the extra vegetables, and a handful of customers responded. The next year, those same customers (and the friends they'd told) were asking for more produce. Walter and Erna decided to expand their garden, and year after year the business steadily grew.

In the early years, the garden was almost entirely U-pick, with customers coming to the yard to collect their produce.
This model started shifting in 1989 with the creation of the Virden Farmers' Market. This prompted the purchase of the classic Peters Market Garden bus, which would be used to haul produce to markets until 2015.

Peters Market Garden has always been a family business. Walter and Erna's three children Tammy, Chad, and Marlin were heavily involved in its operations during their youth. Then in 2008, Marlin officially took it over from his parents. His daughters, Rachel, Hannah, and Keira, have all been involved with the business over the years.
